We are currently presenting four programs for area schools and homeschools: Journey to Sheboygan County Historic Jobs of Sheboygan CountyFirst Peoples of Sheboygan CountyThe Civil War and Sheboygan CountyFull-Day Education programs offer students in grades 2-6 the opportunity to experience American History hands-on, through the lens of Sheboygan County. Open to public and private schools and homeschool groups, our Full-Day Education Programs run from 9:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. and are designed to meet Wisconsin and District curriculum standards. As an example, Our Civil War program offers five hours of hands-on and gallery activities. Students travel back to the time of the Civil War and learn about its impact on the lives of people in Sheboygan County. As we ramp back up to serving more than 3,000 students annually, we need volunteers to help. No teaching experience necessary. We provide training and let you choose your interests. Volunteer: Translate Welcome Corps Refugee Sponsorship Information (Virtual Opportunity)
Rebuilding your life in a new country is challenging, even without a language barrier. With over a hundred years of dedicated service to our neighbors in need, Catholic Charities with the crucial help of volunteers, bridge the language gap for refugees and immigrants. As a volunteer, you will aid Catholic Charities make culturally and linguistically appropriate videos lending your critical language skills to help refugees navigate Welcome Corps. Welcome Corps is a new refugee sponsorship program that enables refugees to bring their friends and family to the United States. To provide answers to refugees’ questions about the new program, you will translate English text (either on PowerPoints or short scripts) and record voice-over videos in a language which represents Catholic Charities’ linguistic needs. These videos cover important topics on how to apply for Welcome Corp so refugees can be reunited with their loved ones. Each script for translation is about 1 page of English text which you will translate into the language you speak as a 1-3-minute-long recording. We prefer audio recordings accompanied by video, but audio-only is acceptable. In addition, volunteers may choose to translate a longer PowerPoint “Information-Session” presentation which accumulates to a 30–45-minute recording. Longer recordings can be translated and recorded in real-time with an English speaker over a Zoom call (PowerPoint sent in advance), or screen-recorded separately on the volunteer’s own digital device. Catholic Charities trains you to record videos within your own home or at one of Charities’ offices to record. If needed, Catholic Charities’ Community Educator will join you via Zoom to record the first video(s) together. Catholic Charities edits and posts the recordings to YouTube and TikTok. ***Please, only United States Volunteers. Catholic Charities is unable to work with volunteers who live outside of the United States for this opportunity, as knowledge of local culture and resources are an important part of the role. Volunteer: Kitten Foster HomesHSSC needs foster homes for all kittens under 8 weeks of age! Kittens are coming in faster than we can keep up with, and we need safe places for them to get accustomed to the world with safe people who can provide for their basic needs. Types of kittens typically needing foster homes are: neonatal bottle babies (need to be bottle fed every few hours), babies with mom, and older babies without mom. All foster parents are trained by HSSC staff, and all materials needed for fostering will be provided. Some needs are short term (week or two) where as others would be longer. Typically no more than 8 weeks time is needed from a foster parent. While an adult over 18 must be the person primarily responsible for the kittens, we encourage involvement from the whole family. In addition to helping our feline friends, this is a great way for younger children to get involved and to provide education about caring for an animal. Occasionally fosters are needed for adult cats as well. Adult cats who are in need of foster are typically cats with fewer social skills or cats who have medical needs. The needs will vary depending on the cat. Volunteer: Hospice Compassionate Companions in Port Washington, WIAllay's Hospice Companions bring comfort to patients and relief to their caregivers by offering a supportive presence, a listening ear, and a helping hand. When visiting, volunteers may offer to play music or a game, read to the patient, listen to his/her stories and memories, sit with a patient outside or go for a walk, or offer assistance with other non-medical tasks. There are times when volunteers may simply sit quietly while holding one's hand, letting the patient know that he or she is not alone. Allay's Compassionate Companions profoundly affect the quality of our patients' lives by simply sharing their time. The amount of time you give is flexible and scheduled around your availability. We do take your location into account to assign patient visits that are within or near your own community. Hospice companions receive training regarding the philosophy of hospice, the role of the volunteer and other staff members, as well as, helpful skills for meaningful visits with hospice patients and their families. Volunteer and patient safety are our top priority. We follow CDC guidelines & respect the Covid-19 protocols of our partner facilities. At this time, volunteers are asked to complete a self-screening checklist prior to visits, wear a mask during visits and, of course, adhere to standard precautions such as frequent handwashing. Volunteer: Pets with a Purpose - Certified Therapy Dogs & Cats for Hospice Visits in Belgium, WIOne of the most frequent requests made by Allay's hospice patients are for visits from a friendly, certified therapy dog or therapy cat. Therapy animals have the endearing quality of showing unconditional love & affection that brings joy to everyone. They are a remarkable source of comfort & companionship, as well as a welcome distraction from the daily routine for both hospice patients and their families. Contact with furry companions can be especially meaningful to patients who are no longer able to care for their own beloved pet. Would you be able to help us fulfill some of those requests within your own community? While many pets provide love and companionship in the home, not all of them have the temperament suited for this type of service. We require all therapy animal teams must have completed training and assessment with a recognized Animal-Assisted Therapy program before visiting hospice patients. (And, the human-half will receive additional training related to hospice visitation.) If your pet is already certified as a therapy animal, Congratulations! You are already well on your way to joining Allay's Therapy Dog Team. If your pet has not been through the certification process, we can get you the resources to help you to get started.Volunteer and patient safety are our top priority. We follow CDC guidelines & respect the Covid-19 protocols of our partner facilities. At this time, volunteers are asked to complete a self-screening checklist prior to visits, wear a mask during visits and, or course, adhere to standard precautions such as frequent handwashing. Allay will provide the necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to ensure safe practices can be followed.
