Volunteer: Project Volunteer

Rebuilding Together Sheboygan County (RTSC) is seeking a Project Volunteer to assist with home repair projects for our low-income homeowner clients. The Project Volunteer will work with other volunteers under the direction of a Project Lead to complete various handyman-level home repair projects. The Project Volunteer plays an important role in enabling our clients to continue to live in a safe, warm, and dry home. This volunteer position is ideal for individuals who have some home repair experience and are looking for ways to improve their skills while giving back to the community, with no long-term time commitment.

QUALIFICATIONS

* Previous experience with home repairs, construction, or related trades
* Willingness and ability to learn new home repair skills
* Ability to work within a group to accomplish assigned tasks
* Ability to perform tasks as required by the nature of home repair work
* Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Pre-project Activities

* Respond to text/email requests from the RTSC Team Lead for volunteer support on a specific project. As a volunteer, you are free to accept or reject these requests at your discretion.
* Upon request, provide the Team Lead with an estimate of time and materials needed to complete assigned tasks.
* Coordinate with other team members to complete assigned tasks safely and efficiently.

Project Day

* Arrive at the client’s home on time and appropriately dressed for the tasks to be performed. In general, all volunteers should wear closed-toed shoes, an RTSC tee-shirt (provided), and other “work-type” clothing.
* Working with other volunteer team members, complete assigned tasks to the best of the team’s ability
* Follow all safety protocols; help monitor work area for potential hazards
* Help keep the work area clean and free of construction debris
* Ask for assistance and/or technical guidance when needed
* Ensure completed work meets professional standards and client expectations to the best of your ability

Administrative

* Notify the Project Lead of all hours worked.
* Notify RTSC or the Project Lead if you no longer wish to volunteer, or conversely, if you wish to take a more active role
* Participate in occasional team meetings as required

The Project Volunteer is a part-time, on-call role, and each Project Volunteer maintains a significant level of control over their own schedule and work hours. Projects are typically structured to require a single four to six-hour day or less. Teams perform most projects on weekdays and during daytime hours. Most projects can be completed in a single day, but more complex projects may occasionally require additional time.

The Project Lead will coordinate, supervise, and support a small team of volunteers to complete various home repair projects, ensuring that all tasks are conducted safely, efficiently, and with quality workmanship. The Project Lead represents RTSC and plays an important role in helping our clients continue to live in a safe, warm, and dry home. This volunteer position is ideal for individuals who are organized, self-motivated, and with a desire to lead hands-on home repair projects that directly impact the safety and well-being of less fortunate community members.

The Project Lead is a part-time volunteer role, with a significant level of control over their own schedule, work hours, and times. Projects are typically structured to require only one four- to six-hour day. The Project Lead has the option to accept or reject any project that he/she is asked to lead. The majority of activities happen on weekdays, and usually only during daytime hours. * Coordinate with the homeowner to ensure there is no misunderstanding about the work to be performed
* Coordinate with other RTSC personnel to obtain the necessary tools, materials, and labor

Project Day Leadership

* Serve as the primary RTSC representative on project days, overseeing all on-site activities
* Obtain a signed Homeowner Agreement from the homeowner prior to commencing any work
* Manage and support volunteers, assigning tasks by aptitude/abilities/interests, and ensuring volunteers have what they need to be successful
* Ensure completed work meets professional standards and client expectations
* Promote safe work practices and monitor the work site for potential hazards
