Allay's Hospice Companions bring comfort to patients and relief to their caregivers by offering a supportive presence, a listening ear, and a helping hand. When visiting, volunteers may offer to play music or a game, read to the patient, listen to his/her stories and memories, sit with a patient outside or go for a walk, or offer assistance with other non-medical tasks. There are times when volunteers may simply sit quietly while holding one's hand, letting the patient know that he or she is not alone.
Allay's Compassionate Companions profoundly affect the quality of our patients' lives by simply sharing their time. The amount of time you give is flexible and scheduled around your availability. We do take your location into account to assign patient visits that are within or near your own community.
Hospice companions receive training regarding the philosophy of hospice, the role of the volunteer and other staff members, as well as, helpful skills for meaningful visits with hospice patients and their families.
Volunteer and patient safety are our top priority. We follow CDC guidelines & respect the Covid-19 protocols of our partner facilities. At this time, volunteers are asked to complete a self-screening checklist prior to visits, wear a mask during visits and, of course, adhere to standard precautions such as frequent handwashing. Allay will provide the necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to ensure safe practices can be followed.
